SAFETY AND FIRST AID (BLOG 7)

Good morning boys!

In today's class let's learn how to recognize the symptoms of a broken bone and sprain and  provide first-aid treatment, and get professional help.

Fractures and Broken Bones

A broken bone happens when one of your bones becomes cracked or broken into multiple pieces. It’s also known as a FRACTURE. It can result from a sports injury, accident, or violent trauma.
Broken bones usually aren’t life threatening, but they do require immediate medical care.

A broken bone can cause one or more of the following signs and symptoms:
  • intense pain in the injured area that gets worse when you move it
  • numbness in the injured area
  • bluish color, swelling, or visible deformity in the injured area
  • heavy bleeding at the injury site
What first aid should be provided?

  • Keep on applying ice-packs or ice-cubes on the injured joint till the swelling subsides.

  • A sling made from a triangular piece of cloth can be used to give support to the broken bone and try to avoid unnecessary movement.
  • Keep the patient calm and comfortable and send for the doctor.

What is a sprain?

It is twist in the joints of the ankle or the wrist.

When the tissues around a joint get torn we call it a sprain.

Sprains cause swelling and sometimes discoloration of the skin.
They are very painful.

What first aid should be provided?

  • Prevent that area from moving by wrapping an elastic bandage around the joint.
  • Soak the sprained joint in cold water, the first day. From the second day, you can soak it into warm water 2/3 times a day as it will help it to heat.
  • Rub muscle relaxant ointments over the sprained joint.
That's all for today boys! Take care and keep revising
