CLASS 5
ANIMAL WORLD (1)
Good morning students!
Welcome back to a new day of learning!
Today's Topic is ANIMAL WORLD
By the end of the class, you will be able to :
➧ define the terms- Environment and Habitat.
➧ identify various animal coverings and the benefits of each.
Animals are living beings. Millions of different kinds of animals live on the earth. Animals are found throughout the world, from the freezing polar zones to the hottest deserts. They live on land and in the water. They come in a huge variety of shapes and sizes. Animals can also sense what goes on around them. Their bodies allow them to move in reaction to their surroundings and the surroundings in which the animals grow is called their environment.
The food habits, behaviour and body features of the animals help them to live in a particular environment. Therefore, an area where a particular animal naturally lives is called its Habitat.
Let us discuss about the BODY COVERING OF ANIMALS
Have you ever noticed the beauty of a zebra or raccoon fur? How about the beautiful feathers of a goose or owl? Different animals have different coverings for many different reasons. Let’s find out those reasons:
There are basically four types of animal coverings: Fur or Wool, Feathers, Scales and Shells.
FUR or WOOL
→ All mammals have fur of one sort or another.
→It may be small hairs or a full fur coat.
→Fur helps to keep the animals warm.
→It also serves as a camouflage to help the animal blend in with its surroundings.
→For E.g- lion, monkey, dog, cat, etc.
FEATHERS
→ All birds have feathers.
→Feathers protect them from cold, rain and help them to fly.
→The feathers of some birds are coloured for camouflage purposes.
→For E.g-peacock, parrot, etc.
SCALES
→Some animals need scales to help them to move.
→For example, the scales on the underside of a snake help it to grab the ground so it can slither along.
→Sometimes the scales help the animal to protect itself. The scales are hard, thick and rough to fend off their enemies.
→The scales of a fish make a slime that makes it easier for them to escape.
SHELLS
→It is a hard covering which protects an animal.
→These animals can hide inside its shell and play dead to escape from its enemies.
→The patterns on the shells serve as a camouflage.
→For E.g- Tortoise, turtle, snail, etc.
Now you can answer the following questions:- (in the notebook)
