CLASS 5
ANIMAL WORLD (2)
Good Morning Students.
Welcome to the Science class.
Yesterday we learnt about Environment,Habitat, the various animal coverings and the benefits of each.
Today we will learn about Breathing In Animals and the Organs of Breathing.
Upon completion of this topic, you will be able to:
- define respiration, gills, spiracles, lungs, amphibians.
- understand the importance of organs like lungs, gills and spiracles.
- differentiate between animals that use different organs to breathe.
Let's begin with BREATHING IN ANIMALS
Do humans and animals breathe similarly? Does respiration in animals occur similarly? Above all, do all animals breath in a similar fashion? Let us know more!
All animals need oxygen to breathe in. Oxygen burns the food within the animal's body and releases energy, which an animal uses for various purposes.
Animals get oxygen from the air or water that surrounds them. When oxygen combines with food, it releases carbon dioxide and energy. This process is called respiration.
Organs for Breathing in Animals
Animals have different body parts for breathing. Different animals breathe through different organs.
The different organs used by animals to breathe are:
- Body surface
- Spiracles
- Gills
- Lungs
Body surface – Earthworm breathe through their body surface. Tiny organisms like amoeba and paramecium live in water breathe through their body surface.
EARTHWORM
PARAMECIUM
AMOEBA
Spiracles - Insects breathe through special air holes called Spiracles.
Air Holes in an Insect
Gills – Aquatic animals like fish, prawns, crab and other moist animals that live underwater breathe air dissolved in water. They breathe with the help of gills, which are full of blood vessels. Fish take in water through their mouths and this water passes through their gills where oxygen dissolved in the water is absorbed and goes into the blood. The gills give out carbon dioxide into the water.
Gills are the respiratory organ of aquatic animals, that breathe oxygen dissolved in water.
FISH
PRAWNS
CRAB
Lungs - Birds, reptiles and mammals breathe through lungs. Human beings take in air through their nose. The air goes into the lungs through the wind pipe.
Lungs are spongy, elastic bags, richly supplied with blood vessels, situated on each side of the heart.
In lungs, oxygen from the air passes into the blood and carbon dioxide comes out through the nose.
BIRDS
REPTILES
Amphibians like frogs, salamanders and toads live in both water and land. When they are on land, they breath through the lungs, while in under water they breathe through their moist skin.
FROG
SALAMANDER
It's time for some written work now.
The following questions have to be done in the Science notebook.
Homework:-
Q1. Define respiration.
Q2. Name the different organs used by animals to breathe.
That's all for today.
God Bless!!
