CLASS 5
SCIENCE
CH - 1 GROWING PLANTS

Good Morning Students

I hope you enjoyed your last class.
You have already learnt the following :
  • Journey from a seed to plant.
  • Parts of a Seed.
  • Structure of a Seed.

Today we will learn about Germination and Dispersal of Seeds.

At the end of the class, you will know:

  • What is germination.
  • What are the conditions required for seeds to germinate.
  • What is seed dispersal.
  • Why is seed dispersal important.
  • What are the different means of seed dispersal.

Let's watch a video and understand how a seed germinates and what are the essential conditions required for seeds to germinate.
Length of the video (5 mins 27 secs)

I hope you enjoyed the video.

Following are some important points to remember.

Essential conditions required for the growth of a seed are :
  • Proper amount of water
  • Air
  • Warmth
Once the above conditions are satisfied, the seed begins to grow.

The seed
  • absorbs water from the soil.
  • and provides moisture to the embryo.
  1. The plant cell inside the seed start duplicating.
  2. Enzymes gets activated.
  3. Embryo starts getting nourishment and starts growing.
  4. Growing plant bursts open.
  5. Roots start growing downwards to anchor the seed.
  6. Food and nutrients from the soil help the root to grow.
  7. The shoots start growing upward towards the light.
  8. Here's our baby plant with tiny leaves.
This process of the growth of a seed into a plant is called germination.

It's now time for a quick recap. Write the following in your science notebook.

1. ___________________, _______________________and ____________________ are the conditions required for the growth of a seed.
2. The change of seed into a seedling is called _______________________.
3. The roots act as an ___________________ to the seed.
4. The ________________grow upward towards the __________________.
5. The seed absorbs water from the _________________.
6. ___________________and ___________________ from the soil help the root to grow.

We now move to our next topic :  Dispersal of Seeds.

Let's watch a video and understand how seed dispersal takes place and what are the means of seed dispersal.
Length of the video (3 mins 35 secs).

Following are some important points to remember.

  • The process of scattering seeds away from the mother plant is called dispersal.
  • Dispersal is necessary for the better growth of a plant.

Means of seed dispersal:
  • By wind
  • By water
  • By men, animals and birds
  • By explosion

Dispersal by wind :
  • Tecoma
  • Dandelion
  • Cotton
  • Maple

Dispersal by water :
  • Coconut
  • Lotus
  • Mangrooves

Dispersal by men, animals and birds :
  • Fig
  • Tomato
  • Strawberry
  • Orange
  • Burdock

Dispersal by explosion:

  • Beans
  • Peas
  • Balsam

It's now time for a quick recap. Write the following in your science notebook.

1.The process of scattering seeds away from the mother plant is          called _______________.
2.Why is seed dispersal important?
3.Two plants that disperse by water - ________________                    and________________.
4. ______________, ______________and ______________ are          plants that disperse by animals.
5. ________________and ______________ are plants that disperse by wind.
6. Name three plants that disperse by explosion.
________________, _________________, _________________

You can read page 6 & 7 from your Science text book for better understanding of Germination and Dispersal of Seeds.

That's all for today.
I hope you enjoyed the class.
Happy learning. God bless!!
