Yesterday we learnt that different animals have different organs for movement.

Today we will learn why do animals migrate from one place to another.

By the end of the class, you will be able to:

  • Define migration.
  • List the reasons of migration.
  • Name the different birds and insects that migrate.

MIGRATION

Let us first understand what is migration.
Migration is the mass movement of animals in response to climatic change.

Every year some animals and birds move from one place to another place for the following reasons:
  • in search of food.
  • to avoid harsh weather conditions.
  • for breeding purposes.
Breeding means the process in which animals produce their young ones.

The bird Arctic Tern makes the longest migration from the Arctic circle to the Antarctic circle and back to the Arctic circle.

Some insects like locusts and monarch butterflies also migrate large distances.
