Growing Plants

Good  morning students!!

Welcome to the Science Blog lesson.

In the last class, you learnt about:
➨ other ways of growing plants.
➨ the factors that affect the growth & development of plants. 

Topic is "GROWING PLANTS"

Today, by the end of the class, you will be able to :
➧ list the tips/points for a better crop yield.
➧ explain the importance of insecticides & pesticides.

There are many steps that go into crop planting before you can reap the benefits and have a successful harvest. While it may sound complex, it's easy when you plan accordingly and have the right tools to help you do the job. Start strong from the beginning and take a proper care of plants. Ultimately, a  healthy crop yield adds health and wealth to the nation.

Terms to Remember:

1. INSECTICIDES: Chemicals used for killing insects. For E.g- D.D.T and gammaxene.

2. PESTICIDES: Substances used to kill insects or other organisms harmful to cultivated plants or animals.

3. FERTILIZERS: Chemical substances supplied to the crop to increase their productivity.

For E.g- Urea, ammonium sulphates, nitrates and super phosphates.

                                              

Tips for a good and healthy crop yield are:

➧Use healthy and better quality of seeds for sowing.

➧ Prepare the land well before sowing.

➧ Add manures and fertilizers to the soil.

➧ Irrigate the plants properly.

➧ Remove weeds from the fields for the proper growth of plants.

➧ Use insecticides or pesticides, to keep the plants pest free.

Q1: Give five tips for a better crop yield.

Q2: Give two examples of each:

a) Insecticides.

b) Fertilizers.
