CLASS 5
SCIENCE (DAY 6)
CH - 1 GROWING PLANTS

Good Morning Students.
Welcome to the Science class.

Now that we have finished our first chapter, we will be doing some revision today.
Let's revise all that we have learnt in our first chapter 'Growing Plants'

Here are some important points to remember:

  • Plants are the most important living organism on earth.
  • Plants are very useful to us.
  • New plants can be grown from seeds.
  • The outer covering of the seed is called a seed coat.
  • The internal delicate parts of the tiny plant is called the embryo.
  • Plants with one cotyledon are called monocot plants.
  • Plants with two cotyledons are called dicot plants.

Let's take a quick look at this video.

  • The change of seed into a seedling is called germination.
  • Essential conditions required for the growth of a seed are proper amount of water, air and warmth.
  • The seed absorbs water from the soil and provides moisture to the embryo.
  • The process of scattering seeds away from the mother plant is called dispersal.
  • Dispersal is necessary for the better growth of a plant.
  • Means of seed dispersal:
  1. By wind
  2. By water
  3. By men, animals and birds
  4. By explosion

  5. 1. Dispersal by wind :
    • Tecoma
    • Dandelion
    • Cotton
    • Maple
    2. Dispersal by water :
    • Coconut
    • Lotus
    • Mangrooves

    3. Dispersal by men, animals and birds :
    • Fig
    • Tomato
    • Strawberry
    • Orange
    • Burdock

    4. Dispersal by explosion:
    • Beans
    • Peas
    • Balsam

Enjoy the video.

  • Growing plants from their body parts such as root, stem or leave is called Vegetative Reproduction.
  • Plants can grow not only from seeds but also with the help of their roots, stems, leaves etc.
  • Growth and development in plants depend on different kinds of Soil, Climate and Seasons.
  • Soil is the most essential component for growing plants.
  • Like soil, different plants are adapted to different climates too.
  • Crops that grow in winter are called RABI CROPS.
  • Crops that grow in summer are called KHARIF CROPS.

This video will help you to understand better.

  • Besides favourable climatic conditions, plants also require nutrients in the form of manure and chemical fertilizers to improve the growth and crop-yield.
  • Fertilizers and manures enhance the growth of plants.
  • Dead and decaying plants, animals' wastes and cow dung are common manures.
  • Insecticides and pesticides are the chemicals that are sprayed on the plants to protect them from various insects and pests.
That's all for today boys.
Read the chapter carefully and revise the above points. We will do a worksheet in our next class.
Stay safe. God bless!!
