Good Morning Students
Let's get ready for the class.
Sit with the following things in hand:
- Science reader
- Science notebook
- Pencil box
CHAPTER 1- GROWING PLANTS
In the last class you learnt about:
- Germination of seeds
- Dispersal of seeds
Today we will learn about :
- Other ways of growing plants(Pg 7)
- Growth and development in plants(Pg 8)
At the end of today's lesson, you will be able to:
- Define Vegetative Reproduction.
- Enumerate upon the different ways of growing plants.
- Explain the factors affecting the growth and development of plants.
GROWING PLANTS FROM ROOTS, STEMS, LEAVES, UNDERGROUND STEM AND SPORES
What do you understand by the term VEGETATIVE REPRODUCTION?
There are plants which can be grown without seeds. They can grow from their body parts.
Growing plants from their body parts such as root, stem or leave is called Vegetative Reproduction.
Plants can grow not only from seeds but also with the help of their roots, stems, leaves etc.
A. Roots that can grow into new plants:
The plants whose roots can grow into new plants are:

Some more examples of plants that grow from their root are carrot, radish, turnip, beetroot, dahlia, sweet potato.
B. Stems that can grow into new plants:
Some plants can grow into a new plant with just a stem cutting of the mother plant.

Some more examples of plants that grow into a new plant with just a stem cutting are rose, hibiscus, money plant, hyacinth, blackberry, grapes, sugarcane, fig.
Potato is a special kind of stem, which grows underground. It has buds called ‛eye’ on its surface. Any piece of potato with an eye can grow into a new plant.
Potato and onion are the stems that grow into new plants.

D. Leaves that can grow into new plants:
Young plants arise along the edges of some leaves.
Complete plants can be grown from these leaves if they are placed in moist soil.

Bryophyllum
E. Growing plants from spores
Some plants do not have seeds, they grow with the help of tiny structures called spores.

GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT IN PLANTS
Growth and development in plants depend on different kinds of :
- SOIL
- CLIMATE
- SEASONS
SOIL :
Soil is the most essential component for growing plants, without soil one cannot grow plants.
We as humans eat different kinds of food according to our requirements, likewise different plants require different kinds of soil to GROW.
For example:
PLANT SOIL REQUIRED
Cotton - Black soil
Coconut - Salty soil
Rice - Loamy soil
CLIMATE :
Like soil, different plants are adapted to different climates too.
For example:
PLANT SUITABLE CLIMATE
Aquatic plants - grow in water
Desert plants - desert area
Rubber - heavy rainfall
Coconut - damp and moist climate
SEASONS :
Crops that grow in winter are called RABI CROPS.
For example:
Crops that grow in summer are called KHARIF CROPS.
For example:

It's now time to do some written work in our Science notebook.
I hope you all have made an inter-leaved Science notebook and covered it neatly.
Mention the name of the chapter and date in the index and attempt the following questions.
Q1) Write the name of plant that can be grown from roots.
Q2) Write the name of plants that can be grown from stem.
Q3) Which plant can be grown from leaves?
Q4) What are the special features by which potatoes grow into plants?
Happy learning!
See you in the next class......KEEP SMILING!
