GROWING PLANTS
Good morning students!! Welcome to our new way of learning science.
Before starting today's lessons let me ask you a question.
Can plants speak to one another??
Your answer may be NO ,but odd as it sounds, plants can communicate with each other. Just like animals, plants produce all kinds of chemical signals in response to their environments, and they can share those signals with each other, especially when they're under attack. These signals take two routes: through the air, and through the soil.
Plants are the most important living organisms on earth . They provide oxygen , food and clothing.
Today let us learn more about plants. The name of our lesson is GROWING PLANTS.
By the end of today's lesson you will learn:-
- How new plants grow from seeds ,process of germination.
- Different parts of a seed.
Most plants grow from seeds. A seed grows into a baby plant when these essential conditions are met ----- proper amount of water , air and warmth .
The process in which a seed turns into a seedling is called germination.
For learning the process of germination we should first examine the parts of a seed.
A seed has three main parts:-
1) SEED COAT:- the outer hard protective covering of a seed
2) EMBRYO:- the tiny plant inside a seed.
3) COTYLEDONS OR SEED LEAVES:- the fleshy part of the seed that stores food for the baby plant.
Watch this:
Some plants have one cotyledon and some have two.
The plants with one cotyledon are called MONOCOT PLANTS.
eg:- Maize , Rice, Onion
The plants with two cotyledons are called DICOT PLANTS
eg:- Gram , Pea , Beans.
During germination the root or the RADICLE comes out of a seed and grows downward. The shoot or the PLUMULE grows upward to produce stem and leaves.
Hope you all enjoyed the lesson , so let's check what we learnt today.
Leave the first page to write you name , class and index.
On the second page(ruled side) draw double lines using your ruler.
Write the name of the lesson 'GROWING PLANTS' ,date on your left hand side.
Now copy these questions and try to answer them on your own.
1) Define the term germination.
2)What are the three main parts of a seed? Explain the function of each part.
3) What are monocot and dicot plants? Give examples for each.
Home work:-
Draw this picture on the blank side of your copy and label the parts of the seed.
That's all for today boys! Thank you and have a wonderful day!
